In August 2016, the NADO Research Foundation released the report Regional Rural Transportation Planning: State Models for Local Consultation, Regional Coordination, and Regional Transportation Planning Organizations. This new report presents information on the structures, membership, tasks, and funding for regional organizations conducting rural transportation planning work in about 30 states. The Research Foundation shares best practices, offers professional development training, analyzes the impact of federal policies and programs on regional development organizations, and examines the latest developments and trends in small metropolitan and rural America.
The formation and unique model of the HRTPO is featured in the report stating “although not a completely rural RTPO, the mixed urbanized and rural character of the HRTPO provides a model for providing professional transportation planning services to rural areas in a large region around an urbanized hub”.
